"Bones" The Pirate Episode

Well, it's Blackbeard again, this time from the mystery television series "Bones." When a dead man is found with a 300 year old bone wrapped in his hand, and that bones proves to be riddled with tertiary syphilis, Hodgins speculated, droolingly, that it must be a pirate bone.  This steers the investigation toward finding the dead man's killer amongst treasure hunters searching for Blackbeard's long lost treasure.

Of course, in real life, there is zero evidence that pirates ever buried their loot.  Most never had that much to bury in the first place.  Images of chests full of treasure, buried in sands with a skeleton left to mark the spot, is the stuff of authors or and movie makers, not the stuff of historical fact.  If Blackbeard's taking prisoners in exchange for a ransom of medicine, is any indication of just what real pirates "treasured" the most is any kind of indication that real pirate life was spartan, then I doubt that many had riches in coin and jewels to just bury for later!

The man with the bone.
